FIGS Courses
FIGS examine the opportunities available at Rutgers and beyond as you discover the basics of research, academics and co-curricular involvement. Each FIGS meets once a week for 10 weeks during the Fall semester and will be worth one credit, graded pass/no-credit. This seminar establishes an important peer group to help first-year students explore not only their academic and career path, as well as their place at Rutgers.
In addition to exploring research and careers in a specific interest area, each FIGS class focuses on 11 key elements:
ELEMENT 1: Creating a Supportive Learning Environment & Community Building
ELEMENT 2: Exploring Information Literacy
ELEMENT 3: Exploring Tools for Academic Success
ELEMENT 4: Exploring Academic Planning & Requirements
ELEMENT 5: Out of class Excursion (related to FIGS interest area)
ELEMENT 6: Exploring Diversity/Multiculturalism
ELEMENT 7: Exploring the Peer Perspective
ELEMENT 8: Exploring Personal Wellness
ELEMENT 9: Exploring Faculty Connections
ELEMENT 10: Exploring Career Development
ELEMENT 11: Final/Culminating Project
Each of the elements is approached differently based on the interest area of the FIGS. For example, a Health & Medicine FIGS may visit a local hospital or faculty research laboratory as an out of class excursion, while a Law & Leadership FIGS may visit a local courthouse to sit in on a hearing. The activities, speakers and information in each FIGS class are designed to be both informative and fun for students.
